The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
