Presence
Soderbergh tests his directorial skills through this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of the spirit. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, including a revelation that may be unexpected. This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a continuation. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has made the local kids on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a basement, he anticipates the worst. Yet the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's wonderfully garish true story about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the corrupt Bakker, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, however Chastain succeeds to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4
